One-day Shintaido Workshop
Spirit of the Flower
by Charles Burns
Sunday 24th May 2026
10am – 4pm (two keiko, 10-12.30, 2-4pm)
Elstree School Sports Hall, Upper Woolhampton, Berks. RG7 5TD
A
workshop for new practitioners to explore Shintaido with more experienced people, and for more experienced practitioners to rediscover the fun of bojutsu.
We’ll be exploring the question:
“How do I cut with a bō?”
I’ll be basing our practice around my favourite bojustu kata: karei no kon (loosely translates as “Spirit of the Flower”). I won’t expect anybody to learn the whole kata – it’s rather long – but you may take a snippet of it home with you to keep alive in your own time.
Please bring a lightweight staff, either a bō or jō is fine. I have a few to lend out on the day if you’re new to Shintaido and don’t have one; please let me know in advance.
Please don’t bring the heavy bō you may have at home which long ago caused you to give up bojutsu because it’s too dense for you to handle.
Dress in keiko-gi if you have it, or any loose comfortable clothes if you don’t. White or pale colours preferred if possible.
